Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones (born September 14, 1973), who performs under the mononym Nas, formerly Nasty Nas, is an American rapper and actor. The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, he was born and raised in the Queensbridge housing projects in New York City. Although he dropped out of middle school, his debut album Illmatic, released in 1994 by Columbia Records, was critically acclaimed and would go on to be widely hailed a classic in the genre. Nas was part of hip-hop supergroup The Firm, which released one album. From 2001 to 2005, Nas was involved in a widely publicized feud with rapper Jay-Z; both rappers verbally attacked each other in their songs. The two formally ended their rivalry through duet performances at concerts sponsored by New York City-area hip-hop radio stations. In 2006, Nas signed to Def Jam, releasing his albums Hip Hop Is Dead in 2006 and an untitled album in 2008.

In 1994, Nas’s debut album, Illmatic, was finally released. It was awarded Five Mics from The Source. About.com ranked Illmatic as the greatest hip hop album of all time, and Prefix magazine praised it as “the best hip-hop record ever made”. Columbia Records began to press Nas to work towards more commercial topics, such as that of The Notorious B.I.G., who had become successful by releasing street singles that still retained pop-friendly appeal. Nas traded manager MC Serch for Steve Stoute, and began preparation for his second LP, It Was Written, consciously working towards a crossover-oriented sound. It Was Written, chiefly produced by Tone and Poke of Trackmasters, was released during the summer of 1996.

In 1998, Nas began work on a double album, to be entitled I Am… The Autobiography; he intended it as the middle ground between Illmatic and It Was Written, with each track detailing a part of his life. The album was completed in early 1999, and a music video was shot for its lead single, “Nas Is Like”. Columbia had scheduled to release the pirated material from I Am… under the title Nastradamus during the latter half of 1999, but, at the last minute, Nas decided to record an entire new album for the 1999 release of Nastradamus. Nastradamus was therefore rushed to meet a November release date.

In 2000, QB’s Finest was released on Nas’s Ill Will Records. QB’s Finest is a compilation album that featured Nas and a number of other rappers from Queensbridge projects, including Mobb Deep, Nature, Capone, the Bravehearts, Tragedy Khadafi, Millennium Thug and Cormega, who had briefly reconciled with Nas. In 2001, Jay-Z, in his song “Takeover”, criticized Nas by calling him “fake” and his career “lame”. Nas responded with “Ether”, in which he compared Jay-Z to such characters as J.J. Evans from the sitcom Good Times and cigarette company mascot Joe Camel. The song was included on Nas’s fifth studio album, Stillmatic, released in December 2001. Stillmatic debuted at number five on the Billboard album charts.

In December 2002, Nas released the God’s Son album. The album peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts despite widespread internet bootlegging. Nas released his seventh studio album, the critically acclaimed double-disc Street’s Disciple, on November 30, 2004. Although the album went platinum, its commercial profile was relatively low compared to the rapper’s previous releases.

In January 2006, Nas signed a label deal with Def Jam. Nas’s original title for his next album was Hip Hop Is Dead…The N. On October 12, 2007, Nas announced that his new album would be called Nigger. Controversy escalated as the album’s impending release date drew nearer, going as far as to spark rumors that Def Jam was planning to drop Nas unless he changed the title. Released on July 15, 2008, Untitled is Nas’ second album with Def Jam, in conjunction with his own imprint, The Jones Experience.

At the 2009 Grammy Awards, Nas confirmed that he was collaborating on an album with reggae musician Damian Marley which is expected to be released in Fall 2009, with a special edition expected to be available exclusively through Best Buy or Target. The Los Angeles Times reported that the album would be titled Distant Relatives. Nas also revealed that he will begin working on his tenth studio album following the release of Distant Relatives. Distant Relatives released on May 18, 2010 on Def Jam Recordings. The album debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 57,000 copies in its first week.

Mystery Jets is an English five-piece indie band, formerly based on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham, London. The band’s first line-up consisted of Blaine Harrison on drums, William Rees on guitar and Henry Harrison (Blaine’s father) on bass. Henry became a second guitarist in the band and they were joined by Kai Fish on bass and Tamara Pearce-Higgins on keyboards. The Eel Pie Island EP was recorded soon after by bishopdante at Rooster studios, from which it became obvious that a period of touring would be required to develop tightness and material, and so a white van with a trailer was bought, and the Mystery Jets set off. Mystery Jets issued its first proper single, a limited edition 7″ of “Zoo Time”, on Transgressive Records. The Mystery Jets ran a series of illegal parties on Eel Pie Island, attracting large crowds, before being shut down by the police. They went on to sign to 679 Recordings. After 2005 saw a number of singles and their TV debut on MTV TWO’s Spanking New Music Week, the start of 2006 saw the band gain their highest charting single with “The Boy Who Ran Away”, play the ShockWaves NME Awards Tour and make their first appearance on Top of the Pops.

The band’s debut UK album, Making Dens, was released on 6 March 2006.December 2006 saw the band release “Umbrellahead / Half In Love With Elizabeth” through its MySpace site to competition winners. It was during this time that William Rees began his romantic relationship with Japanese model, Waka Inoue, whom he had met while on tour in Japan in February 2007. The two tracks were produced by Erol Alkan and were meant to be part of a ten-inch vinyl acoustic EP, but that idea was scrapped. Throughout 2007 the band wrote new songs (including “Hand Me Down”, “Pink Elephant” and “Undercover Lover”, the latter two being renamed “Veiled In Grey” and “Hideaway” and all three being included on their album Twenty One) and played more gigs around the world, especially in America where they released their debut album Zootime (a collection of tracks from Making Dens, as well as EPs and singles) on 8 May, through Dim Mak Records. Henry Harrison decided to stop playing live with the band shortly afterwards, but is still very much involved and went into the studio with the rest of the band. At the end of 2007 the band went on a short club show across the UK, and released a free Christmas single, “Flakes”.

Their second album, Twenty One, was released on 24 March 2008. Produced by Erol Alkan and mixed by renowned producer Nick Launay, it was preceded by the single “Young Love” featuring Laura Marling, released on 10 March 2008. The second single released from the album was “Two Doors Down”. It reached 24 in the U.K charts, their highest position so far. On Sunday 8 June 2008 the band played at the Scottish RockNess music festival which attracted over 35,000 music lovers – the bands set was broadcast on national UK broadcaster, Hitz Radio. The band also spoke backstage about their rise to fame, reviving the eighties and how they plan to take over the world.

In 2008 Mystery Jets along with (Jeremy Warmsley & Adem) contributed the song “Grains of Sand” to the Survival International charity album Songs for Survival. In January 2009 Mystery Jets left their previous contract with 679 Recordings and signed a new deal with Rough Trade Records. They have begun recording a new album – expected 5 July 2010 – and continue to tour. They are set to perform at the Reading and Leeds Festivals at the end of August 2010.

In April 2010, Mystery Jets announced their third studio album, Serotonin. The album was released on July 5, 2010 and was produced by Chris Thomas. A promotional single, entitled “Flash A Hungry Smile” was made available on the band’s website for free. The first single to be released from the album, “Dreaming Of Another World” was added to BBC Radio 1′s B Playlist in May 2010 and has an expected release of July 2010. On Monday 5th July, Mystery Jets performed an instore session at Rough Trade East for their album release. A limited edition 12″ was released as well as CD format and digital download.
